The Next Studio Prize To Be Drawn Will Be “Mussol” …
All the houses and studios are named for birds, and a “Mussol” is an owl in the local language. We have two of them, ghostly shapes that glide past your private terrace as they patrol the gardens below in the evening.
This studio is set just above the swimming pool and looks at the church steeple and on down the valley to the sea. The shower room – water is scarce in the mountains, so no bath – is glass tiled, the kitchen facilities furnished down to the last corkscrew (important for the fine island wine) and the bed is a handmade Queen.
Just outside are fragrant gardens, and one flight down you find the bar, the sauna, and the exercise room, as well as the pool and sun terraces.
The furnishings are in blue and white Indian cotton, with our usual Ralph Lauren sheets. This accommodation is perfectly suited for two people – pretty, comfortable, romantic but practical.
Your private parking is at the top of the property and this accommodation comes with one dedicated space.
The value of the property was 250,000 euros about a year ago, which means that a figure of 200,000 euros in value would be realistic in today’s market.
For rentals, we used to charge 175 euros a night for two people, but that included breakfast and maid service, so let’s say that asking 100/115 euros per night for a self-catering rental would be about right, with the season starting at the beginning of April and continuing through until about the 15th of October.
Altogether, this is one of the most attractive and best located of all the studios.
Balm for the soul …
The local hamlet Galilea offers something special and rare: sweet tranquility. Set just below the crest of a green mountain valley in one of Mallorca’s pristine restricted development areas, the arm-wide vistas from your own individual terrace are complemented by cool silence, broken only by a bird call, a distant sheep bell, the sigh of the breeze in the pines. It’s a place for reflection, recovery and retreat, a healing place, a sanctuary from life’s stresses.
The island’s prime walking area …
Galilea is astride a network of mountain paths, including the famous ascent to Galatzo, one of the island’s premier hiking destinations. For a late lunch, it’s an easy 45-minute walk to Puigpunyent or to La Reserva, one of the island’s wildlife attractions. The range of walking possibilities covers choices for light strolling all the way up to serious trekking.
Or for a round of golf …
For a different kind of walking, within 25 minutes’ drive there is a rich choice of golf clubs: two Santa Ponsa Golf Clubs, Poniente Golf Club, the Royal Bendinat Golf Club (a championship course), and the Son Vida Golf Resort. A half hour away are the Andratx Golf Club or Son Termens Gold Club.
Or sailing, swimming, or scuba diving …
It’s less than a half hour to any of these activities. Riding, too, can be arranged, though you’ll need to drive 35 minutes to the stables.
People think the accommodation is pretty special …
As in Scott’s townhouse hotel, every element of Scott’s Galilea is individually decorated, different from any of the others, though the common theme is rustic sophistication, with bright floral fabrics and comfortable furniture complementing the beamed ceilings and vernacular tiles chosen by Pedro Otzoup, the architect for the complex, one of whose last commissions was Claudia Schiffer’s house on the island. Most of the studios and all of the houses have fireplaces, all have individual south-facing terraces with views to the sea in the distance; aromatic flowers and plants are abundant. Decorative prints hang on the walls and the smaller accessories are eclectic and apt. There is a DVD-connected small TV set, a radio, and kitchen facilities to offer whatever degree of cooking you might wish to pursue. The emphasis is firmly on comfort and convenience. These are prizes to yearn for.
